NANO
Join Nano tomorrow [Saturday, June 12 6-9] for NY artist Shane Kennedy’s first LA exhibition, ‘Jailhouse: Desktop [Tears].’
For your consumption, here is a little more on him and what’s going on exactly.
—–
Taking inspiration from painters under duress, Shane Kennedy has created a series of tiny portrait paintings that reject iconography of the superficial and the minimization, flattening or compression of human suffering in the digital social media complex. Approaching size of canvas or substrate as a clandestine tactic, Kennedy demonstrates the power of the painter to radicalize art without abandoning the positive value of representation. Reduction of dimensions does not equal the diminishing of meaning, Kennedy’s “Jailhouse: Desktop [Tears]” series argues.
Shane Kennedy is currently pursuing a BFA at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in Manhattan, one of the nation’s premier fine art institutions. In the “Jailhouse: Desktop [Tears]” narrative, CU administrative prohibitions are the force against which Kennedy reacts, driven by his passion for and commitment to painting in his varied and rich artist praxis. For the painting series, Kennedy draws inspiration from a variety of sources, including jailhouse painters, while simultaneously confronting art stars who flaunt status over substance.
Kennedy’s influences include Banksy and 4D artist Paul Mclean (with whom he apprenticed and now collaborates). Kennedy shares their contrariness, bold disregard for artificial persons and disinterest in the status quo as state-of-the-union.
Based in New York City and born in Tennessee, Shane Kennedy and Nano look forward to the artist’s inaugural one-man west coast exhibition with great anticipation. According to Jonny Coleman, Nano director, the diminutive architectural design of Nano Gallery is a perfect correlation to the cell-like nature of Kennedy’s new jailhouse “Jailhouse: Desktop [Tears]” paintings.

Thanks to everyone who made it out to see our inaugural show over the past 2 months. The remaining pieces of Gert-Jan’s show are still around for a while, though.
Upcoming assemblagist/sculptor/madwoman Lizzy Waronker has recently shanghaied Nano Gallery, and it now sits somewhere on the east side in her studio as she prepares for ‘The Alchemist’s Closet,’ her upcoming installation later this month. See more.
Our first solo show and proper grand opening will be taking place in February 2010, but we have a preview selection of micro artworks from various Southern California artists open now.
Check with January and holidays hours at Bleicher/Golightly [http://www.bgartdealings.com]. The Nano Gallery is inside and available to view whenever B/G is open. More info about our 2010 exhibitions coming very shortly.
We are currently designing the building for the worlds smallest art gallery. It will be simple and small but will do big things. Keep an ear out for our first show early December.
